Known for their dark, chocolate colored eggs, the dark color of the Black Copper Maran egg is part of the bloom. Because of this, egg color varies with season, age and each hen. It can take up to 20 or more eggs from a new Marans layer to achieve its final color. Maran eggs start out darkest at the beginning of the laying season and lighten over time, returning to their original color after a molt or other period of rest. These Marans are bred to the standard of perfection with copper hackles and feathered shanks. Expect 3-5 dark chocolate eggs/wk. I cannot guarantee that every hen will lay the darkest egg. There are too many genes involved in egg color to reliably predict each hens egg color. However most from this line have been at a 5-6 on the maran scale.
