Javas may be the best kept breed secret. You rarely hear about them, and they don’t typically make “Top 10” lists. But they should. The lovely Java is an endangered breed. Javas  are gorgeous, lay a decent amount of pink tinted eggs and tend to lay through the winter months. Yipee! They forage for much of their food, and are very cold hardy. They also tend to tolerate the warm summer months well. Although Java chickens love to free range, they also tolerate confinement well. So, if you get a blizzard lasting several days, you can keep your Javas in their coop, no problem. Javas are docile, calm, and sweet. One chicken keeper described hers as “Friendly, will greet you at the door to get picked up.” Because these birds enjoy human attention and interaction, they are a suitable breed for children. Expect 160-180 LARGE pink tinted- eggs each year, laying well into the winter. Javas average life span is 5-8 years, and they continue laying long after other breeds have stopped. They can thrive in both hot and cold climates if protected from the elements.  Java chickens are a strong and hardy heritage breed.  A wonderful addition to any flock. Note, I cannot promise all hens will lay the pink tint of egg color.  There are too many genes involved in egg color. However, Javas are known for laying eggs that do look pink in color.  Also, as a heritage breed they grow slowly compared to other breeds. They may take 6 months to reach their full weight, and almost as long to start laying.

**Due to the high sensitivity of this breed as chicks (temperature, handling stress, etc), I do not adopt these girls out until they are at least 10 days old.
